July 2025 Diversity and Inclusion Calendar: Key Dates

July DEI calendar: inclusive observances for Canadian workplaces

July is a chance to reflect on national identity and support religious inclusion. From Canada Day to Ashura, here’s how your workplace can recognize these dates in thoughtful and inclusive ways.

Canada Day — July 1

Canada Day marks the anniversary of Confederation in 1867. But in recent years, it has also prompted necessary reflection on Canada’s colonial history and the experiences of Indigenous Peoples.

Use this day as a learning opportunity. Ask your team:

  • What do we really know about Canada’s history?

  • Did you know Canada Day was originally called Dominion Day?

  • How can we celebrate while honoring Indigenous voices and truths?

Workplace ideas:

  • Share educational resources about Indigenous history and Truth & Reconciliation

  • Create space for reflection and conversation

  • Consider spotlighting Indigenous educators, authors, or leaders

Canada Day can be more than a celebration — it can be a moment of growth and allyship.

Ashura — July (10th day of Muharram)

Ashura is a sacred day in Islam observed by both Sunni and Shia Muslims, though its meaning and traditions vary across communities.

For Sunni Muslims

Ashura is marked with fasting and prayer, commemorating the parting of the Red Sea for the Prophet Moses and the Israelites.

For Shia Muslims

Ashura is a day of deep mourning and reflection. It marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussein at the Battle of Karbala — a symbol of resistance and justice.

Inclusive ways to support Muslim employees:

  • Provide a quiet prayer space: Muslims pray five times a day, including during work hours.

  • Offer Halal options: Ensure workplace meals and events include Halal food so all colleagues can participate.

  • Respect fasting: Be mindful that some employees may fast as part of their Ashura observance.

  • Support charitable giving: It’s common to donate food or resources on Ashura. Consider offering a matched donation or sharing local charities.

Ashura is observed differently across Muslim communities — recognizing this diversity is a powerful step toward inclusion.

Inclusion happens every month

Celebrating holidays like Canada Day and Ashura with care, curiosity, and cultural awareness strengthens your workplace culture year-round. Encourage learning, listen actively, and always make room for voices that need to be heard.
