August 2025 Diversity and Inclusion Calendar: Key Dates

August Inclusion Calendar: DEI Days to Recognize and Celebrate at Work

August is filled with meaningful dates that invite us to celebrate culture, acknowledge history, and build more inclusive workplaces. From Emancipation Day to Women’s Equality Day, these observances provide powerful opportunities to reflect, educate, and create belonging.

Here’s a roundup of key days to mark on your calendar—plus inclusive ways your team can show up with intention and respect.

Emancipation Day (Canada) – August 1

Emancipation Day commemorates the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which became law across the British Empire—including Canada—on August 1, 1834. It is a time to reflect on Canada’s legacy of slavery and ongoing systemic anti-Black racism, while also celebrating Black Canadians and the leaders driving change today.

How to Observe:

  • Educate Yourself: Start with trusted resources like the Canadian Women’s Foundation.

  • Host a Training: Offer team sessions on topics like Anti-Racism, Juneteenth, or Black History Month to open the conversation and deepen awareness.

Tish’a B’Av –August 2 to Sunday, August 3

Tish’a B’Av is a solemn day of mourning for the Jewish community, marking the destruction of the First and Second Temples and other major tragedies in Jewish history. Observed through fasting and prayer, it is a deeply spiritual day of reflection.

How to Support in the Workplace:

  • Offer Flexibility: Support paid time off or flexibility for those observing the day.

  • Respect Privacy: Not everyone will want to talk about how they’re observing—let your team lead the conversation if they choose.

Raksha Bandhan – Saturday, August 9, 2025

Raksha Bandhan is a joyful Hindu celebration of sibling love and protection—often extending beyond biological relationships. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi (sacred thread) around their brother’s wrist, and in return, brothers promise to protect them.

Ideas for Workplace Inclusion:

  • Send Warm Wishes: A thoughtful email or small card can go a long way in acknowledging this important cultural day.

  • Celebrate with Food: Encourage employees to bring a dish that represents their culture for a workplace potluck.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples – August 9

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, launched by the UN in 1982, raises awareness about Indigenous cultures and promotes the protection of Indigenous rights. It’s a time to recognize Indigenous communities’ strength, contributions, and ongoing struggles for justice.

How to Engage:

  • Promote Learning: Share resources and host training on Truth and Reconciliation, National Indigenous History Month, or Native American Heritage Month.

  • Support Indigenous Voices: Elevate Indigenous stories, businesses, and perspectives within your organization and beyond.

Women’s Equality Day – August 26

Women’s Equality Day marks the ratification of the 19th Amendment in the United States, giving women the right to vote. It’s also a moment to reflect on persistent inequalities—from the gender pay gap to the "motherhood penalty."

What Employers Can Do:

  • Host an Educational Session: Discuss topics like pay equity, workplace bias, and the barriers mothers face in career advancement. Use tools like Lean In’s Workplace Resources.

  • Ongoing Commitment: Add International Women’s Day or gender equity workshops to your annual training calendar.

Final Thoughts: Inclusion Is a Year-Round Commitment

Acknowledging DEI days is a meaningful step—but it’s the everyday actions that define your workplace culture. Use these observances to spark learning, share stories, and create space for everyone to feel seen and valued.
